NEW ASRA WORKERS SHOW THEY CARE

Three determined new workers at a residential scheme for Asian elders, in Streatham, are showing they really care by working towards the coveted National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) in Health and Social Care.

Parveen Amavasee, Lilaben Patel and Saraswatee Gobin were appointed Care Officers at ASRA Greater London Housing Association’s Aashna House last month. They are all keen to achieve the care industry’s gold standard award.

Parveen has already achieved an NVQ Level 2 qualification in Child Care and is now training for Level 3 in Health and Social Care. Lilaben and Saraswatee have both started working towards Level 2 in Health and Social Care.

The NVQ in Health and Social Care, a work-based qualification, assesses the skills and knowledge that people need to perform their job effectively.

The qualifications are based on National Occupational Standards which define what employees must be able to do and know about their sector.

Mathini Navukkarasu, Care Manager at ASRA’s Aashna House, said: “Our new Care Officers have a variety of experience and backgrounds, but they’re all keen to excel in their new roles. It’s great to see such enthusiasm.

“The training will fully develop their skills so they can confidently assist in day-to-day activities and promote participation and independence among residents.”

All of ASRA’s care workers undergo specialist NVQ training.  Many see their career prospects flourish and go on to gain further qualifications.

Other job relevant training needs are also identified and appropriate courses provided. ESOL classes are commencing this week to support staff with English language needs.

Manna Santokhee, ASRA’s Head of Care added: “Having well-trained, fully qualified and motivated staff means we can be sure that every one of our carers is competent in their role.

“We are committed to consistently delivering first class services to all our residents and the NVQ training helps us achieve this.”
